For me, the question is “which company do I want to give my web browsing data to: Google, Apple, or Mozilla?”
I use Google Chrome on all of my devices, including my iPhone. The reason is that
- Google is in the best position to use my web browsing data to improve my experience on the Internet. They can link my web browsing data to all the other data they have about me, like my emails and the ads I click on, and use it to improve the content I see.
- Google hires the best engineers, and ships products very carefully, so I’m fully confident that my data will be secure. (Apple and Mozilla are probably pretty good at this too, but I don’t have as many friends there, so I’m not as familiar with their engineering culture.)
- I have friends at Google. I visit Google all the time, and I’m keenly aware that the free food I eat is a direct byproduct of Google’s data advantage
