Hello SRMites, as an alumnus of SRM Institute of Science and Technology-ktr, I would like to welcome all young talented people who have the ability to innovate and make the world better.
So yes now you would be entering a different world with lot of expectations of various kinds so here are some tips which will make your life at SRM a lot better after facing lot of small + big problems now as an experienced guy i don’t want any other to face such issues. Let’s start-
- Welcome to SRM – As you have started your journey here you will be first going to your hostels exploring rooms, floors and other people. SRM is a city in itself with over 9k enginners graduating each year, you can imagine the total strength of all four years. As a fresher don’t sit in your room and be on your laptops and sit go out explore people and places.
- From home to hostel – Now this is the place where you will stay for atleast one year of your college life ( then you can shift to places like Abode, Estancia , VGN, safaa etc). What matters here is your roomates, talk and know about them ( education, native place, family, branch etc) an understanding roomate is like getting a placement in a core company.
- Explore people- This place has students from PAN India, name any place in India you will find a person from there. Now how to explore go out of your room talk to people on the floor, talk nicely and know about them, then as your classes start make friends there not only from your state or you already know make everyone your friend and get to know as much people as you can and this is the right time to interact to everyone and know who is your kind and can hold your hand till the end so filter your friends wisely as they have the power to grow or drown you in a deep ocean.
- Explore places- So you are in CHENNAI, being here will not be an easy job initially because of the climate too, but trust me you will start liking it as tike goes on. Famous for beaches, temple and good infrastructure explore various places and this city has lot of famous restaurants, malls etc. Go out with friends you have made in classrooms, hostels as this is the nice opportunity to know them better. Whenever you feel homesick get your friends, go out and chill.
- Classrooms- Classes for first year people are in University Building which is having good infrastructure to store a hell lot of students. Lifts are good and fast unlike hostel lifts. Each branch would be alloted with a floor and according to that you have to leave your hostels to reach class on time.
- Teachers- It depends alot on which branch you are in, they can be as good as a best friend or as bad as an evil that can effect your grades to different level so have good relations atleast don’t have a bad term with any of the teachers, avoid messing up and arguing with them. And try to have a very good relation with your Class Incharge which would be alloted to everyone and know him as he can be a person who can help you professionally and personally in various problems you might face in the college.
- Seniors- This is not the place where you will face ragging by any of your seniors everyone is so busy with their life there so ragging and stuff will not be a problem but ya do try to find a senior who has answer to all your questions and problems which you will face there and that can be the right person to guide you what to do what not to in any present issues you face.
- Cultural clubs and committees – Get into clubs of your choice display your talent as it will help your grow socially, and explanding your knowledge alongside. You will find clubs for every domain like singing, dancing, drama, sports, discipline etc.
- College Fests : Aarush & Milan- These are the two fests which our college has, try to indulge in both and have active participation as it will enhance your leadership skills and will expand your knowledge in various managerial processes. Peope will say to not go in these fests and concentrate in other things but listem them only if you are here to study not explore the world above study which matters a lot as people with best grades won’t get a job, only people who will be successful are people who have moderate grades with all round skills because only that matters in the end.
- Food – Food is love, so you might think getting this right in a place like chennai is difficult except the mess food which becomes uneatable after one or max two semesters you will find lot of good places to eat whatever category you want in JAVA ( place inside a college where you can get what you want) apart from this in Potheri you will find lot of good chaisutta places, super-markets and bike renting places. Also nearby college around 2–3kms you have Mc-Donalds, Dominoz, Burger King, A2B, OMR food street so have nice food whenever you crave for it and specially for foodies Chennai is really a great place to explore as city has lot of amazing restaurants where you can be and enjoyy and ya you will find lot of gyms, where you can burn calories you gained while having food from all these places😉
- Don’t forget your motive : Return on investment depends upon you ie money spent by your parents on education which only you can get back by proving yourself and getting successful As you are here to be an engineer explore, participate and have fun but growing in your academics is as vital as growing socially. So when time comes where you need to study and prove yourself work hard then change some of your priorities and work hard to get good academic score. Lots and lots of exams would be there and studying one night with dedication can help you get good grades. CT-1, CT-2, CT-3 and then final University examination are the examinations you will have to go to clear one semester and this keeps on repeating enjoy whenever you get time but do study for these exam, as your score in each one of them gets added to your final semester grades.
- Chill and Enjoy: Have fun … yes have fun don’t get into overthinking stuff like what will happen , will i be placed or anything. Just enjoy the present moment as college life is a one time experience which will change your life totally- in positive or negative manner that would depend on your actions and occasionally you have fun like getting into some alcohol stuff is okay but making it a habit or getting into some threatening drugs which can effect you physically and mentally i would suggest just say no to them and stay away that’s all. I think i have said alot now so yes at the end of four years you will have lot of memories to cherish and ya don’t forget your family in all this chaos talk to them whenever you get time coz they will stand by your side no matter what happens. It would be a journey with lot of ups and downs but stay strong, be happy, smile and let go all the things and focus on your life goal.
I will end with a motivational quote,
” Life has no remote so get up and change it yourself.”
