Why is SRM University considered to be bad?

Being a pass out of the college, I can tell clearly if you are just focused on obtaining job after the completing B. Tech and don’t have any better options apart from SRM University, then go for it. Big companies, mainly Infosys, TCS, CTS, Accenture and Wipro take almost whole campus for 3 lpa so there is a sort of job guarantee that is not present in many local colleges.
But if you are thinking that it is the college which will help you strive and get ahead, then you are expecting too much from a private institution that is just concerned with your money. Everything is expensive, ranging from your course fees to hostels and unnecessary additional charges like exam fees. They completely drained us out in our 8th semester since they couldn’t do that from next semester.
Teachers are extremely inexperienced. They are mostly SRM or Valliamai campus M. tech graduates. They have quite bad temper if you get in their wrong side. Hence flattering them is a good way to keep them on good side and get marks (which is the only thing that matters there).
Practical knowledge is not the focused. There are 4 exams yearly just like in school. One or two practical sessions in a week which are just for namesake. In Cse IT and SW branches, you need to focus on the practical aspects yourself as college is not much of a help. Even teachers don’t have much knowledge. They just skim over about the subjects they are teaching you. So many times our teacher stopped in middle of the session because she got confused or didn’t know the explanation. There will be some exceptions but those teachers are not interested in teaching because the students are only interested in marks. The teachers eager to teach lose their excitement when they see students disinterest and how they care only about the marks they are getting in cycle tests and model exams.
On the side of co-curricular activities, it is average. To reach high positions by your fourth year make sure to keep good contacts with your seniors who are finally the ones to elect. There is lots of politics here. Also, since many students are there, thus, a lot of competition. With work, a lot of socializing is also necessary. In four years, I had seen how some of my friends were left behind due to favouritism even after doing a lot of work.
If you are expecting a college to widen your knowledge base and opportunities this is not the place. Though there have been students who developed there own skills and knowledge. So it depends on students also. So if you are sure that you are able to study without somebody pressurizing you with assignments and you can go on your own without any teacher’s help, then you don’t have any problem. By assignments I mean the ones with practical knowledge. SRM teachers usually give assignments that just need to be copied from Google or other classmate. They don’t even evaluate that.
It mainly depends on the students how they make their college life. Some are successful and may be better than their IIT/NIT counterparts (that number is at most 5) and some just pass three years doing nothing academically. And as they say karma is a bitch. It comes back to you in the form of placements and final year project. For both you need advanced knowledge which the college failed to provide. The college that didn’t teach you anything, made you mediocre, is demanding results from you in the form of a “high class never been done project” and placement package with 7-8 lpa. The teachers are big pain at this time, with them suddenly asking for those concepts in the project they failed to teach a year or two ago.
I found SRM University bad in the above areas. These points are strictly my views and I don’t represent views of other SRM students. But as of now this is the truth of most prestigious university of India.
Whatever I said holds only for B.Tech. students. Condition if M.Tech. is worse. Hardly any placements.
