What is the best way to prepare for a CS degree the summer before I start college?

  • 0

Do something fun this summer – the next few years will be a lot of work, and you’ll be (hopefully) doing some thing for work in the CS world in the summers. And then you’ll be working for 40 years. A road trip is traditional..

Do something that is a project from beginning to end – using a computer, but also using something that’s “out of your primary field” – Maybe you’ll build a weather station controlled sprinkler system, or a little robot that drives around your living room, or pretty much anything.

What about a solar tracker that points a mirror at the sun and automatically tracks so that it keeps the sunlight shining on a spot on the wall? That will require some math (to figure out the reflections, etc.) some mechanical stuff (moving a mirror) some programming (to make it all work).

How about some software to predict *exactly* when the sun (or moon) will rise and set, taking into account your local horizon.

If you’re in the US and able to get to the total eclipse track in August, what about some cool project to measure something or capture video during the eclipse. Again, this brings in lots of stuff – research on the equations involved, implementing some simple software, perhaps, etc.
