I am first year student and like everyone read a lot of negative answers on quora before joining the insititute and and want to clear some misconceptions about srm here :
NOTE : the following answer is only related to the main campus SRM KTR (which i believe is the one worth joining the most)
- SRM has 1 GB of data available for anyone who enters the campus , one has to sign in using there phone number , and has to enter the OTP which is sent to there phone number. The wifi is available in Dr. T.P Ganesan Auditorium , Tech Park, Library and a few other major locations.
- SRM Hostelers are provided with an ID and password to login into the wifi , the wifi signal varies for most of the hostels the signal is pretty good except for some of the older hostels were work is being done to upgrade the network
- WIFI is available 24*7 and for most part speeds are significantly fast !! You can Streaming Netflix videos , youtube at 1080p , other streming sites , playing games (pubg and many more) is seamless so chill 😉 , speed is constant on some occasions u might get disconnected where you have to login again to reconnect still better than switching on hotspot or connecting a dongle , being a muti network connection its difficult to calculate the speed , its a 3GBPS bandwidth network and you get around 45 to 65 MBPS upload speed on average in the UB building, Tech park , and auditorium , and around 10 – 20 MBPS or even 40 – 50 MBPS in the hostel depending upon the traffic
- Sites like torrent are banned given that its an educational institute and its illegal to download from torrent sites it is expected i guess 🙁 , and vpn are blocked for obvious reasons to avoid any cyber crime attempt , and unlike the answers written on quora major social media apps like whatsapp, instagram, facebook , snapchat all work jst fine and there is no restriction what so ever
- Coming to the monitoring of the net , they do have access to the logs and sites we visit but our privacy is not breached or the sites we visit are not questioned or checked upon unless you end up searching or doing something thts not legal and comes into there notice, and yeah jst to be safe dont watch porn using SRM wifi
- There is limit of 30 GB of high speed net per month on the hostel wifi and 1 gb per day additional net available to everyone after which you still get the net but speeds are low abt 520 kbps
- All CSE and few other branch students also get an ID to sign into Campus wifi available in the classrooms and the speed and data limit is as mentioned above
