I was fortunate to get a chance to pursue a foreign internship in the summer after my second year (I dropped my PS 1), at Wolfram Research in Boston. It was truly a wonderful experience where I learned a lot, made loads of new friends from various countries and had a lot of fun. I also had a chance to personally interact with Stephen Wolfram, and just a couple of conversations with him proved to be an illuminating experience. I also had a chance to sit down and work on a problem with his son, Christopher Wolfram. I must confess that till now I have never seen a person who is so sharp that he can understand things quickly and articulate his thoughts to explain to others, and code a solution to the problem in clear terms. It was hard for me to keep up with Christopher’s thinking! But that short experience gave me a deep insight into problem solving, which I still cherish. That summer was hectic because I had to manage it with Google Summer of Code, but it was manageable.
So students at BITS Pilani definitely do get interesting foreign internships. Most students typically pursue a foreign research internship after their 3rd year (due to PS 1), although this is not the norm. Various students also spend an entire semester abroad as part of their PS (Practice School) 2 or their off-campus thesis, whichever they choose.
