Obviously one could make a lot of money if one knew this for sure so I’m guessing. I will assume that five or ten years is too short for new types of hardware to be commercialized so here is what people are working on now.
1. Machine learning. It’s big now and it’s potential is obviously huge
2. Research on new kinds of substrates for computing. The ones that win may not be the ones that are hyped.
3. Continued incremental progress in algorithms.
4. Personal favorite wild guess — computing for impaired people. The US is aging. Perhaps well designed interfaces can help old people cope better with daily life.
5. War robots, again a wild guess but based on stuff we’ve seen. People are always looking for an advantage in combat.
6. Remote sensing and telemetry. Useful for many purposes.
