I graduated from one of the northern NITs and my younger brother graduated from BITS Goa. So these are the differences which I have seen between BITS and the NITs:-
- Better curriculum in general:- Most NITs(exceptions do exist) don’t revise their curriculum regularly where as BITS does it regularly(almost bi annually). A good example of this is Engineering Drawing where we people are forced to use drafters and other instruments where as in BITS they just teach them AutoCad and let them pass out.Similarly we’re only allowed to take electives in are 4th year where as they start taking electives from second years onward itself. They also have access to more number of electives especially in the Humanities departments like Anthropology etc which is especially useful if you want to crack exams like UPSC etc.
- Standardization in curriculum and better placements overall:- All the 3 BITS campuses maintain the same academic standards, the only difference is that Pilani Campus has got the better students due to higher cutoffs and hence better placements in general. However the difference in placements between Pilani and Hyderabad isn’t as great as lets say the difference in placements between in NIT Trichy and NIT Srinagar. The Average package for all of them is upwards of 10 lakhs and the Median salaries are in the 9 to 10 lakh range.Unless you’re studying CSE/Circuit branches in NITs you won’t get such placements.
- Better Alumni Connect:- For some or the other reason I have seen BITSians to be too loyal to their Alma mater and the number of their Alumni who occupy positions as VPs,AVPs,Directors is far higher than any one NIT can ever match(Southern NITs like Trichy/Warangal and Surathkal do come close though). Thus in terms of sheer alumni they beat us with ease. This creates a virtuous cycle where the alumni again pick their college graduates and those people do the same.
- Better faculty in general:- The NITs are facing a massive faculty crunch due to low budgets and court cases being done by faculty unions and have resorted to hiring contract faculty on temporary basis to make ends meet. Most of these contract faculty have done their MTechs from 3rd class colleges and don’t know how to teach at all. In BITS the actual faculty teach most of the courses and hence the teaching quality might be slightly better.
