Some M&A experience, especially experience with mergers of technology companies may be useful, but 5 years doing M&A at a major NYC law firm is probably best for preparing you to do another 5 years of M&A work at a major NYC law firm.
Generally, I’d echo Jesse’s second paragraph and add that it’s just as important for you to understand the technology industry and have seen lots and lots of business deals so that you can have a good toolkit to use to develop creative solutions. Take a corporate finance course, learn rudimentary accounting, learn about revenue recognition, GAAP and tax. Learn about international issues faced by technology companies, like data privacy, alternate regulatory requirements, tarrifs and restrictions on import. Learn about offshore manufacturing and the complete process of making products from sand to iPod, become a jack of all trades, master of most.
