Having done my under grad in Mechanical Engineering, I wouldn’t be opting for Aerospace if not for IIT’s and IISc. Reasons:
1. A generalized course such as Design and Manufacturing can put me in any field after my Masters. I can be working for an aerospace company as a design engineer or an automobile company. But a specialization in Aerospace would restrict me only to aerospace company.
2. Scope of aerospace in India isn’t great. You can never put your hopes on campus recruitment even if you’re graduating from a prestigious university such as IIT. One of my IITian friend who did Aerospace ended up in an IT job.
However, there are also chances of ending up in a lucrative government job. Job opportunities lies with companies like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), National Aeronautics Lab (NAL), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC – R&D Center of ISRO), Aeronautical Development Establishment, Civil Aviation Department, etc
