I am in the industry for the last thirty years. It has been mentioned so for the last 25+ years. We all remember after the Y2K issue was fixed, there were predictions that there would not be any further requirements for software engineers.
I know the demand will be there at least for the next couple of decades. But, gone are the days of average/plain vanilla software developers. The skills/expertise level expected has changed drastically and is on the higher side recently.
