Generally speaking, counseling and psychotherapy are used interchangeably within the profession. Let us not confuse these with ‘Life Coaching,’ which requires no professional training or licensure, although there are probably some gifted coaches out there. As for guidance, that’s a generic term that might apply to any number of situations involving someone who provides advice and counsel, such as a cleric, teacher, mentor, etc. As a Rogerian counselor myself, which is based on the ‘person-centered’ therapeutic methodology developed by Carl Rogers, I avoid giving any guidance whatsoever, but rather help the clients to figure out the best path for themselves. But I know others in my field who feel perfectly qualified and comfortable in providing advice and guidance to their clients. I hope this helps answer your question.
