Motivational interviewing With unconditional positive regard when developing a rapport only! Client centered approach. although listening is validating , the number one complaint is that when asked by following therapist “what did you work on with previous therapist?” The answer is “ don’t know”. Identify pattern, challenge them, make a tx plan directed at one thing , agreed and suggested by client via motivational interviewing and don’t deter. When behavior is extinguished , terminate. You are not their friend Or crutch. Once that occurs you have an axis 2 or your just exploiting their insecurities and dependence on sessions for monetary gain. Never forget medical necessity, law, and ethics. Axis 2 disorders gain more insight and growth via groups. Particularly DBT. Hope this helps.
