What are the best qualities to look for when hiring general counsel?

You got some very good responses here already. I believe I would probably echo Marie Keith almost word for word. She stated everything I would look for in a General Counsel. The only thing I might add is values. Good personal values are essential or they might get torn apart by an aggressive prosecutor.
