It comes down to many things choosing what to study in college. AS someone who is currently studying information technology I will give some hopefully helpful advice.
I thought long and hard about Comp SCI or IT and I chose IT for various reasons. At my university both degrees are offered through the school of engineering, so either way you get an engineering degree. Both degrees require courses in discrete mathematics, statistics and physics. Plus data structures and algorithms as well as other various programming courses including databases, operating systems and software engineering. But information technology is broader as it includes courses in security and managing systems, servers and systems administration. Comp SCI parts ways at that point because instead of those aforementioned courses for IT, comp SCI includes courses such as Calc up to CalcIII then you have linear algebra and differential equations. Plus courses like vector calculus as well. If you have a new found love for software development like I do, I will say either degree path should work out equivalently because really both degrees will prepare you for software engineering. But IT is broader and covers more technology related material so I feel like it provides more options and preparation out of the gate. However, CS is all theory and no doubt will take your mind and thought process very deep into the subject. It was a tough choice for me and I really weighed out the pros and cons. In the end it really came down to which is more convenient because the school offering CS didn’t have any night classes It would have been extremely difficult driving an hour to go to class as I work full time.
