Being an ex-TnP coordinator of NIT-Silchar, I feel I should take this up:
- Research: This is something which makes any college stand out. Both the south Indian colleges and NITs are bad at it in general. But, as becoming a faculty in NIT requires you to meet some basic and strict criteria , and is in general more elite a job to have, people do prefer this and hence, even at the remotest locations , you at-least have faculty who are involved in research and are known in the relevant forums.
- Research for students: Believe me, this is very, I repeat, very different from faculty research. Faculties target very complex ideas and target numbers, students work on fantasies (Generally). I had got INR 1.3 L totally at my disposal , which was just for a fantasy project (Some miraculous robot) from the research promotion cell. It’s like your biggest fantasies being channelized with no monetary restrictions. We completed a part of our fantasy and are now applying whatever we learnt with that in our own respective professions (Includes machine design , Image Processing, Machine Learning etc.). We all have generated a lot of intellectual property with that in terms of patentable ideas. http://www.nits.ac.in/rpc/index.php
- Placements (CSE): Not to be biased, CSE of NIT Silchar has taken a delayed take-off in terms of placement. This year’s (2016) placements included biggies like Goldman Sachs , PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Wells Fargo, SAP Labs, Samsung R and D , Snapdeal, C-DOT (PSU),DRDO etc. which hired almost 50% of the CSE batch, while most of the remaining got decent offers as well. Which is ,if not better, at least quite at-par the Bengaluru colleges. It takes a lot of effort for any company to come to Silchar (They need to invest at-least 3–4 days for a job they could have done in 1 day, but they still come investing all the time and money). This shows the respect that this brand has.
- Placements Core (Mech,EE, Civil) : NIT is better , far better, as it gets PSUs along with the most revered private firms (which rarely hire high on numbers, and very rarely giving packages at-par PSUs). Companies like BPCL, HPCL,OIL,IOCL, ONGC, POWERGRID, HSCC,BEL, REC,DRDO(MOD,GOI) etc. visit NIT quite regularly. This year this has again rejuvenated after long stint of dormancy.
- Start-Ups: Bengaluru for better inspiration for sure with a better VC culture, but then , NITs get funds directly from government. The incubation cell exists. Recently NIT Silchar organized an innovation summit which attracted crowd from Far-oof colleges (including IIT-K,G etc. ). This, my friend, is all the magic the brand plays. An RV Silchar couldn’t have done what and NIT Silchar does being where it is. TechnoPark | Innovation-Investment Opportunity
- Location: Silchar is far-off. So are many good colleges. But then there are two types of colleges,
- College in Some City
- City having Some College, The first part in either cases , is what the corporate generalizes and community remembers. So , the choice is yours, Brand or City!
