Is Delhi University overrated ?

Absolutely!
I was fascinated by DU and its culture during my school days. Like so many other students, I used to dream of studying in a reputed DU college.
Having studied here for two years now, I feel I am equipped to answer this question, and I am highly dissatisfied with the course curriculum, the infrastructure, and the way things function in DU in general.
Let me list a few things I find unsatisfactory here:
1. The faculty: You will find too many DUites cribbing about the fact that the faculty is not up to the mark. Yes, there are a few professors who are brilliant, but most of the faculty members either have no interest in teaching, or don’t know how to teach, as a result of which the students prefer skipping classes and studying on their own.
2. The infrastructure: The infrastructure of most of the colleges here is horrible. The buildings are dilapidated and in dire need of repair; the computers in the labs or cyber cafes are extremely slow, and the WiFi in most colleges doesn’t work. Although I would I agree that there are some colleges, like mine, which have all of these facilities, and are constantly improving; but generally, even the reputed colleges don’t have a good infrastructure.
3. The hostels: I don’t know about other colleges, but the two hostels of my college are in a pitiable condition. And I say pitiable, not because they are dirty or unhygienic, but because they have illogical rules imposed on the students, which make no sense to me at all. For example, even in the scorching heat, students are not allowed to install a cooler in their rooms. They keep sweating like pigs all night, not being able to get sound sleep, but the authorities clearly don’t care. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the 7:30 pm curfew!
4. The curriculum: The course curriculum is purely theoretical – you don’t need any practical knowledge of the subject at all to score good. Few days of rote learning and you’ll be good to go!
5. The fest culture: It’s all overrated. Trust me, it is. I’m not a party person so I’ll speak for myself and people similar to me. The cultural fests might be a lot of fun, but after a point you start getting bored and lose interest in attending them. They seem like such a waste of time. And the glamour is overrated too.
6. The job opportunities: Except for a few top-notch colleges like St. Stephens’ and SRCC, the job opportunities for an average student studying in Delhi University are scarce. Unless you are a brilliant student with a superb record of extra-curricular activities, chances of you getting placed from DU are almost nil. And even if you do manage to get placed, the job description is either not satisfactory, or the salary is meagre. Most students opt for higher studies.
