Is a computer science degree useless? I have started my BS CS degree already and can’t go back now but a lot of people have been telling me it is worthless as you don’t need it to be successful in the tech world at all. Did I make the wrong choice?

  1. Is a CS degree useless? No. No it’s not. Think about all of the people who have told you that it’s useless. Did they have a CS degree? Find someone who doesn’t have one, and ask them how they broke into the field. While anyone fresh out of college with a degree is lacking in professional experience, they get more hits on their resume. The real trick of making your degree useful is to recognize that it’s a small part of success. Try to land a part time job with a company with a strong software presence, maybe even starting with an internship.
  2. Did I make the wrong choice? No, no you did not! It’s important to understand that any degree even vaguely related to CS will generate interest when entering the job market. As stated in part 1, some professional experience will help a lot. Also, making the decision to pursue a technical degree helps you. It gives you some insight into whether or not you will even enjoy this field. It teaches you so many things lacking in our profession that you won’t find in the field. Writing, communication and even critical thinking/problem solving are more effective if you have training
