Telecommunications engineering is just a subset of electrical engineering, so unless you define telecom engineering otherwise, in principle you are an EE, with specialty in telecommunication engineering.
My definition of a telecom engineer is someone who:
- Understands telecom modulation systems (AM, FM, Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, DVB, ATSC, etc.)
- Understands coding theory
- Has a basic understanding of digital signal processing
- Understands communication systems (networking, satellites, telephone, etc.)
Oil and gas companies use telecommunication equipment, but don’t develop it. You may want to consider mining engineering; however, based on your question you seem clueless on what you are actually studying, or your potential career, which is very worrisome. Study something you love, not something forced upon you.
