Let me start my first describing myself.
I have done my b. Tech from upes, M. Tech from IIT BHU, and planning to go for a phd.
Now coming to your answer
Life at ‘DEHRADUN’
Really Amazing weather and at the college side, i have never ever seen such a place. At times it is like paradise here. If you live in bidholi (nearby college) or in campus, you will at times witness an unseen beauty and panaroma. Sometimes there is snowfall in college.
Nearby places Mussoorie, dhanulti, haridwar, rishikesh. No need to describe glory of these places.
Itself in dehradun – FRI, SAHASTRADHARA, ROBBERS CAVE, INDIAN MILITARY ACADEMY.
Really a nice place to live.
Now coming to “UPES”
*Beware, i am about to tell you the dark side which you will eventually realise living there or after you pass out of the college. And the fun fact is despite knowing this at the back of your mind you will lie to yourself that everything is going fine and smooth and according to your way.
Let’s start with a genuine fact that you have done nothing great coming here that you could be proud off. And let me tell you the bitter truth that you can’t achieve anything great graduating from here. Sorry if i hurt you, but this is harsh reality that you will eventually experience.
From now on, i will write upes in lower case only because this college does not deserve or i should say is not credible enough that it is to be written in capitals.
Seriously, see the fee structure, above 22 lakh fees and including cost of living and other expenses, it is approx 25lakh. (for the year 2018–22)
Once again 25 lakh rupees invested for B.Tech and that too from a not so extraordinary college. I am literally shaking right now just by writing the amount.
Do you even realize how much is this amount.
Now let me open your eyes that investing such a big amount over a period of 4 years on any thing like mutual funds, SIP, gold, land, you will easily end up getting 30lakh or more in the 4years time period. It is better to remain a 12th pass and have 25-30 lakh in hand. You can easily open an effective business and can live a lavish life.
25 lakh invested, and after 4 years you land in a job of an average 4–6 lakh that too in an IT company or even a core company will not pay you more than that(leaving the rarest of the exceptions and don’t think you will land up in that exception).
Now comparing yourself with ordinary private engineering college students, you’ll find that you are no better than the students from these colleges in terms of skills acquired. In terms of education….. ohh shit!! . What do you expect from a person teaching you, who is not even have a phd nor have any industrial experience. Most of them are b.Tech from small private engineering colleges and m.tech from some NITs or IITs and pursuing phd from upes only just for namesake. And they call it “World Class Faculty “
Btw Let me tell the present scenario, there are 16 IITs and 31 NITs in india and their are ample no. of M.Tech people coming out every year.
Those who could not find jobs for themselves, how do you expect them to make you skilled and capable.
And then comes “World class research facility”, the reality of which you will get to know once you get there.
The only thing they will teach you is to keep your handcuff and collar buttons closed.
And after 4 years you are not even capable enough to crack a psu or any government level exam.
Now i must tell you that i am not a pessimistic kind of person. Being graduated from the college and experienced all the difficulties and challenges, it is my responsibility to show a right path to my juniors so that they can excel in their life ahead.
So my msg to people who are planning to join upes for graduation- please do not opt upes for undergraduate studies. You definitely have an alternative and better choice, just look for that. If not, wait, take time, analyse, realise, think practically and don’t be afraid to wait for another year and go for a better institution.
For people who are in their 1st years- if you think that it is not worth to continue 4 years here, please take a daring decision and opt out. I know that it is hard to do so as more than 3 lakhs of your parents hard-earned money is already gambled in. But you can convince your parents and believe me you will not regret that in later years. Sometimes it is wise to take few steps back if you have mistakenly chosen the wrong path.
For people who are already pursuing their graduation from there, please don’t ever be disheartened. Even you can achieve the glory and can accomplish your dream. You just need to have one thing with you- The faith and confidence in yourself. Never ever loose faith in yourself howsoever worst the situation is. You are the chauffuer of your own life. Just move the steering the way you want. Always remain focus and have a growth mindset. Remember “Growth mindset person doesn’t think that success is being the best, but instead believes that success is doing their best”. And from now on take your own decisions and never give the authority to anybody to take decisions on your behalf for your life. By doing so you will have nobody to blame except yourself for whatever bad happens in your life. And if something good happens, always give credit to your parents because they are your true wellwishers.
And finally, you have no right to enjoy, being responsible for wasting your parents money which they have earned by the sweat of their brow. Just kidding, don’t worry, you can obviously enjoy afterall it is b.tech and more than that you are just in early twenties. But remember one thing , work so hard so that you can enjoy hard.
And one more thing to add for boys. Its your twenties, go out and lift some weight because this is the time when your body and mind are growing, channelize your energy, make some real blood flow in your veins, gain some confidence and courage and never ever be afraid of anything or anyone and take a step towards a responsible manhood.
