How fast is the LAN/WiFi at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus (2017)?

  • 0

Bandwidth
The campus has a bandwidth of 800Mbps currently. LAN as well WiFi operate on this complete architecture. Hostel rooms as well as academic block are provided with LAN as well as WiFi. The complete bandwidth is dynamically allocated on the basis of users however there’s a reserve of bandwidth for both academic block and hostels which can sometime throttle the maximum bandwidth.

Speed

Over LAN you can achieve a maximum speed of 80–100 MBps (640Mbps-800Mbps) over the local network in case of low number of users and 10–20MBps (80Mbps-160Mbps) in case of high number of users where as the same figures over the internet would be 30–40MBps (240Mbps–320Mbps) and 1–2MBps (8Mbps-16Mbps). These speeds are considering that you have a gigabit ethernet, in case of a 100Mbps ethernet connection your maximum transfer speeds would be stuck to a max of 12.5MBps(or 100Mbps).

Over WiFi the max speed would be about 1–2MBps (or 8–16Mbps) and a low can be so poor that you aren’t able to browse website. The WiFi system is still not upto the mark and is developing with time.
