Having said that, how you can do it – Every A Group student (The 4 year BE course guys) has slots for Open Electives (OEL) apart from Discipline Electives (DEL). I do not remember the exact number as it has been quite sometime since I saw the eligibility sheet. Maybe some other BITSian can provide the specific info on that – the exact number.
Anyways, there are two things you need to do – For graduation, you need to complete both the Course Requirements as well as the Units requirements. What this means is simple. Every course has some credits. To graduate, you need to have completed for example, lets say – 3 courses minimum and 9 units (assuming each course is 3 units). (what 3 units means – you will understand once you reach on campus and see the TimeTable booklet when you would be making your timetable. If you are not able to make head or tail of the timetable booklet, take help of senior!).
Ok, so this way, you have slots for OEL through which you can take courses different from your discipline. That’s what the word “open” means. Satisfy both the course and units requirements and you are good to go. There is no upper limit on the OELs one can do as far as I remember, however of course you would want to complete your degree in 4 years, that is a constraint!
Yes,it adds value to your resume, of course. Being a chemical engineer, and having done some good courses of CS would certainly add some colour to your CV/Resume which would help you in Placement if you intend to go for CS profile jobs or in further studies.
