There are many reasons to this some of which are –
- Competitive. General medicine is one of the most favourite branches among PG aspirants. This makes it harder to get a seat in general medicine which only toppers would be able to get.
- Complexity. As you study about NEET PG subjects more and more you gradually start to like the complexity and the vastness of medical knowledge. Nowhere is this knowledge more complex and vast than in general medicine. So people who have studied extensively (toppers) tend to like general medicine more.
- Accomodating. General medicine has something in it for everybody. It accomodates people from all walks of life. Hence toppers who are not sure what to take select general medicine because it is the safest and evergreen option.
- Rewarding. Monetary benefits are quite heavy. There is no end to earning if you sub specialise in medicine to the fields of cardiology and gastroenterology. And whatever one may say, bottom line is always money.
- Passion. Many toppers have a passion for medicine even before they start preparing for NEET PG. The subject is just beautiful.
- Challenging. General medicine as a subject is tough to crack and grasp. This challenging aspect of it is what allures toppers to select it as the branch of their life.
- Generalism. General medicine makes you a complete doctor because as an internist you cannot reject a patient at your doorstep. If he has an illness then you have to diagnose him or atleast refer him to the right specialist. There is gratification in knowing or atleast trying to know everything.
- Satisfaction. The amount of satisfaction it provides when you diagnose, treat and follow up a medicine patient is immense.
- Recognition. Lay people may not know about a pyschiatrist or anesthesiologist but they surely know the family doctor or the medicine doctor.
