India: How did Manipal and Amity university get ranked higher in QS world rankings 2015 than NITs and IITs?

  • 0

Below are the areas which are considered for QS rating as per the official website along with weightages :

  1. Academic reputation 40%
  2. Employer reputation 10%
  3. Faculty to student ratio 20%
  4. Citations per faculty 20%
  5. International faculty ratio 5%
  6. International student ratio 5%

If we look at these metrics, private universities like Manipal have focused on having strong faculty student ratio, international visiting faculty and student exchange programme. Also academic reputation is based on expert opinions and quality of research output. As I’m aware, Manipal puts a lot of emphasis on research by the faculty and also strongly encourages students to have research articles. With adequate funding for research by faculty and students, automatically academic reputation and citation per faculty also will have a good score. Being a private autonomous university, it maintains a strong faculty to student ratio and regular tie ups with foreign universities for student exchange programmes. Hence it’s no surprise that a properly planned long term strategy by a university management which has its priorities straight to get into the top rankings.
