Hey there!
I would like to answer your question because I did my engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology. Life at Manipal is MAGICAL..be it for a girl or a guy. 🙂
- Hostel: There are various types of accommodation available. 2 seater, (with AC or without AC), 3 seater with common bath, 2 seater non AC with 4 sharing bath, Single rooms (with or without AC) …so you can choose whatever suits you the best. However, in first year the allocation of accommodation was on first come first serve basis. From second year onwards it’s based on different criteria, like your CGPA, seniority etc. The rooms are clean and well equipped with all basic amenities that you might require. Also, they have a common TT room gym and TV 😀 I will attach a picture of my hostel room when I find them(I stayed in a double room for 2 years and a single room for 2 years)
- Hostel in timings: In first year the in-timings are 9:30 PM(it might have changed now…but this was it in my first year) From second year the timings are 10:30 PM or 11:00 PM (they keep changing it) During exam time, they increase it to 11:30; the authorities know that we do group study.. 😉 Anyway, I guess 10:30 is pretty good 😉 No restrictions on where you go before that time 😀
- Mess: As compared to other colleges, the food is pretty decent here. You get a LOT of varieties to choose from. Also they have frooti, juices, chips chocolate available in the mess. You can buy at your own convenience. And if nothing suits you, there are a LOT of food joints in the campus itself 😀
- Night canteen: that’s in your hostel block. This place is okayish and will come to your rescue when u missed ur dinner 😉 also when u r trying to pull an all nighter 😀
- Location of Hostel: The first year blocks are a little far from where the classes are held. You will have to walk a little bit but definitely you will enjoy that. 😉 (you will get to know why I am saying this when u reach there ;)) From second year, the college is 3-4 mins walking distance and there are many shops right in front of Hostel to address your needs. You can LITERALLY get anything in those shops. Manipal stores, Campus Stores are such shops, from bucket, to makeup to mobile recharge to Xerox ANYTHING. Oh, how convenient that was. 😀
- Clothes:Â yeah according to college rules there are a lot of stuff, like girls cannot wear sleevless etc. But believe me dear, you can wear anything you like. (No shorts though during class or when you are in library) but apart from that, you can pretty much be comfortable in anything you like.
- People: Trust me when I say this..you will meet AMAZING people. Different cultures come together as one in Manipal. Yes, you might not gel up with some, but you will get friends for life 🙂
- Academics:Â that will mostly depend on your branch, but every branch teacher is approachable…if you are up for learning, they will help you in any way they can.
- Cost: Manipal is a student friendly town so the expenses are not much…you will see the prices for everything increasing every year…but it stil is very low as compared to other cities.
- Weather: oh man! Rains <3. Odd sem is pretty amazing with constant drizzles and sometimes heavy downpour. Even sem is kinda a little hot. Btw, you might get to see double rainbows too 😀 I will quote a line I read in one of the blogs, “Manipal ki hawa me jaadu hai…nasha hai” (Air in Manipal has magic, kind of an enchantment)
- Safety:Â Well this is a concern for a lot of people. We had in-hostel time as 10:30 PM at night, but even so, it is safe when the college is not having any semester breaks, its sad that I had to add this, there was one unfortunate case once. However, I don’t think any other place can offer safety as much as Manipal did. There is a “Campus Patrol” car running all night in campus. If there is any problem or an emergency these people will be by your side in a couple of minutes.
- Life in general: I can’t seem to find words to describe this. I will try though. Manipal is a wonder. You have almost no restrictions on anything …in this place you are away from all the stereo type people. You can be who YOU want…you can learn what you want. This place gives you an altogether different perspective to life in general. You might think that I am blabbering way too much..but this is the truth. Manipal has made me who I am today. At the end of 4 years, when ‘Manipal life’ is over you will understand what I meant. 🙂 As most of the people say, “You can take me out of Manipal, but you cannot take Manipal out of me”.
