Being a graduate from UPES (2016–2020) I think i am eligible to answer your question. I stayed in a hostel outside the campus from the beginning. I didn’t get campus hostel because there were so many students who had applied for it. Everybody wants a hostel where you can wake at 8:50 for a 9 am class. I was in the waiting list and ultimately decided to take a hostel outside campus. I won’t say i regret taking that hostel. Life there was amazing. The only thing i didn’t like was the food. It was just the worst food you can find. This was the situation of most of the hostel at that time. But in my 3rd year things started improving because now due to so many hostels opening, there was a competition among hostel owners to attract students. However I also met and talked to a lot of students who were in the campus hostel. My roommate who came to my hostel in 3rd year had stayed in campus hostel for the first two years and then left it and stayed at my hostel for the last two years. He told me really amazing stories about what they used to do at campus hostels. According to him, it was a really fun experience to stay there. Sometimes the food wasn’t good. But this is same with every hostel there. I would recommend that you stay at any hostel for the first 2–3 years and then go and stay at PG. Hostel days is one of the best part of your college life. Beleive me you will learn a lot of things and make a lot of friends in hostel. And then you can go to a PG. Earlier during my time the hostels and PGs weren’t that good. But now PGs are providing even better facilities than hostels. Also try if you can stay in campus hostel for once. Even though it won’t matter much if yous stay at campus hostel or some other hostel. I had the best time of my life in the hostel. And that’s why I didn’t leave it till the end. Because sometimes you make so many friends and you don’t want to leave them and go to some other hostel. I wish i could go back to those days.
