The pros:
- It pays well and will likely be in high demand for the foreseeable future.
- It is great fun if your personality runs that way. Imagine solving puzzles all day, and getting paid for it!
The cons:
- It requires talent. It isn’t enough just to be smart, hard working, and highly educated. There is a talent for engineering, which is hard to define but easy to recognize, rare, and likely innate.
- The field is meritocratic and competitive. If you can’t solve problems and add value, you won’t last.
- The field evolves quickly, so you will have to keep on learning to keep up. Plan on learning about a college course worth of new material every year, likely on your own time, forever.
