Most large universities and university systems have lawyers on staff or retainer whose task it is to handle the legal wording of contracts and other legally-binding documents, the legality of policies, and law suits. Universities get sued, but they also sometimes have to sue people – employees, former employees, contractors, etc. At a university, legal questions arise all the time, and it can be helpful to have a legal expert to give advice and vet things before they become public. I suppose it would not be that unlike being the counsel for a company.
