A general counsel is, at a minimum, the chief legal officer of a company.
It is her responsibility to identify, prevent where possible, and address all of the legal and regulatory issues that are relevant to the company. She supervises any other attorneys on staff, chooses and oversees the work of outside counsel, including litigation, and reports to the corporate leadership on those matters.
