There may be some overlap but generally guidance and counseling refers to function performed in an educational or vocational setting to help the students or participants be successful. It may include planning for the future, helping them choose a career, pick the right curriculum, or develop the study or other skills necessary for completion of the program. There may be some assessment and testing of vocational and academic aptitude and interest. Occasional adjustment and development may be assessed also. It sometimes includes help with personal problems that may interfere with learning or achievement. That’s where there is overlap. Counseling psychology is the subarea of psychology that deals with helping folks resolve personal problems and issues, actualize potential, and develop coping strategies and interpersonal skills. It may involve some psychological testing to identify problem areas, strengths and weaknesses. Counseling psychologist usually deal with adjustment problems and milder psychopathology than clinical psychologists who usually deal with diagnosable mental disorders.
