Hello, I’m an Amrita student graduating this year. I have a cousin who studies in SRM Kattankulathur campus. Through out this answer I l try staying neutral and not giving a biased answer. I will list down Pro’s and con’s of the two.
Amrita University(Coimbatore campus)
Pros:
- The university has been accredited the top grade(A+ or AAA) for a good number of period. This ranking definitely helps in campus placements and higher studies to an extent.
- The number of companies coming for recruitment is fairly higher than other colleges in the state. It would easily be among top 10 or 5 in terms of placement scenario.
- The curriculum is also fairly good that if you are from CBSE background you can catch up with the syllabus easily.
- The campus is one of the most beautiful campus in the nation, well maintained, you get all the amenities within the campus. The architecture is simply amazing.
- The lab facilities are very very good for a private university. I have not seen any IIT/NIT laboratory, but when comparing to other state affiliated colleges , ours stand apart.
- The faculty – student ratio is well maintained. The strength of the entire engineering batch in a year would be only around 1200, whereas the other private universities have upto 5000-8000.
- If you are really keen and interested in developing your engineering skillset, there are lots of people who can help you in the college. There are lots of small/mini project opportunities you can get within the course itself.
- There is only one college fest – ANOKHA. That is 98% student run fest, the faculties try their best to stay out. If you get to be a part of any committee within this fest, trust me you will learn a lot about many things during those 3-4 months of span.
- The hostels are within the campus and easily its one of the well maintained hostels(i.e, its clean, the repair works doesn’t take long).
- There are lots of opportunities for sports and non academic stuffs.
- The campus is highly safe for girl resident or any student I could say.
- Most of the faculties are amazing.
Cons
- You can’t really get out of the campus as you wish. There is a out pass system, you need to take pass to go out, I mean for anything.
- You have to wear uniforms.( I personally feel its good wearing uniforms for many reasons but majority of the folks don’t like, so I’m putting up here in con)
- You really can’t access the labs like 24*7 as they do in IIT/NIT. To access the labs post academic hours you need to have permissions from HOD.
- The food is very bad. At-least I could say for the money we pay its not the worth.
- There is no cultural festival.
SRM University – Kattankulathur
Pros
- The campus is very big, its really huge. Its like a mini township.
- The classrooms are mostly air conditioned, to suit the hot weather of Chennai.
- There are many tech teams like force, SRM humanoid etc, they have their own sponsors. They win a lot of competition, its really very tough to get into these teams.
- The placements are fairly good too, just like Amrita many companies visit here.
- I have heard the food is very good i.e, the variety and quality of the foods are way better than amrita.
- The hostel facilities are good. You can choose if you need AC/Non-AC rooms, bath/without bath attached rooms etc.
- They have two grand college fests namely Aarush and Milan(Tech and cultural fest). The exposure is great compared to other college fests.
- The faculties are equally good here.
- The freedom is more here in SRM than Amrita, in terms of going out of campus or uniforms etc.
Cons
- The campus is over populated. There are so many people in the campus, each batch has 3-4 times of our campus.
- The weather is very hot, summers are nightmare here.
I have tried to stay neutral answering the question despite being an amritian. So as far as I’m concerned both the universities are very very good compared to 95% of the other institutes in the country. Whatever you choose, strive hard for excellence. I believe any student with real interest can easily excel in any of these colleges. Good luck.
