There are total 5 categories(as of 2019) for the admission in VIT, ranging from CATEGORY 1 to 5. Category 1 is top lot students who came here by general top ranks.(I M FROM CATEGORY 1 as my AIR WAS AROUND 3k ). They have to pay the normal fees. Then comes category 2, they have to give an extra amount of money(in reality a donation) of around 1 lakh per year extra w.r.t to CAtegory 1. Category 3 have to pay 2 lakh extra, similarily category 4:3 lakh extra,category 5: 4 lakh extra every year. They have just changed the terms. Its actually a kind of donation but to make it sound more feasible they call it category. According to Category the ranks are also decided. For example CR(Closing rank) of CSE Category 1: 3.3k , Category 2:8k and so on
